Y13 Vocational Options

In year 13 students have the option of continuing with their Introductory course in Vocational Studies or to complete a qualification in a particular area of vocational study. Currently we are able to offer a level 1 qualification in Catering, this is on-site at the Ashley High School 6th Form campus, or in Hair & Beauty, Construction & Engineering, Painting & Decorating or Motor Vehicle. These qualifications are delivered off-site at the Bridge @ 37 campus in Runcorn.

Catering

What is the course about?

This City & Guilds level 1 NVQ Certificate course in Food Preparation & Cooking provides students with the skills to work in a kitchen - from storing food hygienically to cooking simple dishes. Students could go on to work in any professional kitchen, perhaps in a hotel, restaurant or school.

What topics will I study?

Core Units

  • Maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working area
  • Working effectively as part of a hospitality team
  • Maintaining food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food

Additional Units

  • Preparing vegetables
  • Cooking vegetables
  • Preparing hot and cold sandwiches
  • Preparing and cooking meat and poultry
  • Preparing and cooking pasta
  • Cooking and finishing simple bread and dough products

What will this course lead on to?

This qualification can get you started in a number of career roles within the kitchen environment. It is also a great foundation for further training. After earning your certificate, you can move on to a range of level 2 catering qualifications, including a Diploma in Professional Cookery, a Diploma in Hospitality, a Diploma in Professional Food & Beverage Service, an Award in Barista Skills or an Award in Professional Bartending

How will I be assessed?

Students will be continually assessed through practical activities within the kitchen environment and complete a personal portfolio of evidence

What is the course about?

The NCFE level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Occupational Studies for the Workplace qualification is designed for learners aged pre-16 and above. The qualification is intended to be accessible to a wide range of learners of all abilities. Learners can develop a more 'hands on' approach to their learning and gain practical skills, knowledge and understanding in their chosen vocational area(s). The skills, knowledge and understanding gained may help learners prepare for work through real or simulated work situations and may contribute to preparing them for working life beyond education. The qualification is intended to give learners a solid base from which to further develop their skills and learning.

What will this course lead on to?

Following the successful completion of any of the Level 1 Occupational Studies in the Workplace qualifications, learners may progress to workbased learning and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to demonstrate competency through NVQs/CBQs.

How will I be assessed?

To achieve these qualifications, learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the units as detailed in the qualification specification. Grades are not awarded
